Commercial electrical and communications fit-out for Calvin Christian School in Kingston, Tasmania

A commercial electrical fit-out for a new education building requires careful planning, compliant installation, and the ability to integrate power, lighting, data, communications, safety, and accessibility systems into a single reliable outcome. Compass Electrical + Communications completed the electrical and communications works for a purpose-built new General Learning Area building at Calvin Christian School in Kingston, Tasmania. The new two-level GLA building was designed to support the school’s growing student numbers, provide four modern classroom spaces and help replace older demountable buildings with flexible, permanent learning areas. The project also supported Calvin Christian School’s broader plans for a double-streamed primary campus and improved learning environments for students and staff. More information about the school’s development can be found on the Calvin Christian School website.

The problem

Calvin Christian School required a complete commercial electrical and communications solution for a new two-level education facility. The building included four General Learning Areas, accessibility requirements, modern lighting needs, communications infrastructure, safety systems, security, audio-visual services, climate control and specialist hearing augmentation.

For a school environment, the electrical installation needed to be safe, practical and future-ready. It also had to support everyday teaching, student movement, staff use, digital learning, accessibility and compliance requirements. Calvin Christian School wanted an electrician who understands the complexities of modern-day educational facilities and has experience in delivering high-quality outcomes.

The work completed

Compass Electrical + Communications delivered a broad electrical and communications scope for the new GLA building. This included the installation of LED lighting, LED pendant lighting, motion-detection-controlled lighting, exit and emergency lighting, power points, USB GPOs, a new distribution board, switchboard works and submain cabling.

The project also included electrical works for a new lift to improve disabled access, electric window controls, dry fire services and protection, and the installation of split-system and ducted air-conditioning units.

The communications and technology scope included data and communications cabling, Cat6a data cabling, fibre optic cabling, data rack installation, communication underground pit and pipe installation, WAP installation for wireless access, audio visual installation, smart TV installation and CCTV installation.

Security system installation was also completed, including a new DGP. Hearing augmentation was installed in each General Learning Area to support hearing impaired users and improve accessibility across the learning spaces.

The result

The completed project provided Calvin Christian School with a modern, safe, and functional educational facility that supports flexible learning, digital connectivity, and accessibility. The new GLA building now has reliable lighting, power, data, WiFi, security, CCTV, emergency lighting, audiovisual systems, and climate control across four new classroom spaces.

The installation improves energy efficiency through LED and motion-detection-controlled lighting, enhances safety through emergency and exit lighting, and improves access through lift and hearing loop systems. The school now has a permanent, purpose-built learning environment designed for current use and future growth.
